Elizabethton- With the Falcons still searching for win number 1 on the season, they found themselves with a daunting task as they took on local powerhouse Elizabethton. The Cyclones were 7-0 coming into this game, and the game definitely showed why. Volunteer gave a valiant effort but eventually fell to the tune of 56-0 and 0-8 in the year.
EHS Quarterback Rhett Slagle lit up the scoreboard with 5 passing touchdowns in an offense that is known for its rushing prowess that also had a good night. The defense for the Falcons struggled against probably the best offensive line in the district, but playmakers like Owen Fleenor and Grant Winegar made plenty of good plays for the Falcons. After a few easy drives and a punt return for a touchdown for Betsy the Falcons found themselves digging out of another hole at the half down 49-0.
With the continuous running clock in the second half, the Falcons held their own and only allowed EHS to score once more to make it 56-0. Unfortunately, Volunteer was unable to get on the board in any way and lost this matchup. The injury bug was once again in attendance - the Falcons lost an RB for the year as #6 Austin Glass went down with an apparent leg injury.
Now the only RB left on the roster is the Falcons star, Keelin Releford who will have a large task at hand this Friday. The Falcons will travel to the Big Red Valley and take on county foe, Cherokee, in the Hawkins County Super Bowl. The Chiefs are currently 2-6 and have lost games to the same opponents the Falcons have lost too with the exception of Cocke Co High.
These two teams matchup really well. Run a lot of the same offense and have a few playmakers scattered around their respective rosters. It will be interesting to see if this young Falcons squad can dig deep and get a win against their biggest rival.
