Church Hill- Both varsity teams find a way to get in the win column after scrappy games against Grainger County Friday night. The Girl's team has plenty to be happy with on their way to the 13th win of the year for this squad. Meanwhile, the boys finally got the monkey off their back with their fiery matchup to earn their 3rd win of the season.
We will start with the Lady Falcons game which was textbook old-school basketball. Defense was huge in this game as both teams were playing lockdown defense. No one was safe in the paint as more shots than anyone could count were blocked. Jacie Begley found herself in foul trouble early on some more than questionable calls, but that didn’t stop her as she put together a great first half. Other fantastic individual efforts came from Veda Barton and Ava Jackson as they were able to hit timely shots when they needed it most. The Grizzlies played well, but not before the Lady Falcons put together a great 31-22 lead at the half.
Coming back out into the second half, the whole team came together to play great basketball with the Houck sisters putting their game on display to help others. Lady Grizzlies struggled to keep up, losing their offense as the Lady Falcons took advantage. With a final score of 50-34, the Lady Falcons found their 13th win of the year. A massive improvement from last year's 5 win season.
As we moved on to the Boy's game we knew we were in for another scrappy battle as both of these teams were very much needing a district win. The game started hot as both teams found points early. The Falcons were crashing the boards with a lot of power being able to put up easy layups. Some fantastic shots by Owen Tullock and Lucas Gilliam kept the Falcons in this game as both teams played wonderful defense. At the half, the Falcons held on to a 24-22 point lead.
In the second half, players like Griffin Head and Owen Miller took the spotlight with perfect defense and nothing but net shots. At one point, while the tension was at an all-time high, our player of the game Owen Miller blocked a shot on defense, got the rebound, and then drained a three-point shot to kill all momentum for the Grizzlies. Plays like that are what you need in must-win district games as the Falcons fought off a comeback attempt by the Grizzlies ultimately winning 58-53 to secure their 3rd win of the season.
All these teams are in a tough stretch as the weather is forcing all basketball teams for Volunteer to play 4 games in a matter of 7 days. The Falcons will be back in action Monday night for a high octane matchup against county rival Cherokee in Rogersville.
