CHURCH HILL- After a beautiful night at VHS as they celebrated homecoming, the Falcons found themselves on the losing end of things as they lost to Sullivan East Patriots 40-13 to fall to 0-3 on the season.
Quite the game was played on Friday night as the Patriots continued their offensive dominance on the shoulders of their star QB Drake Fisher. Fisher threw 5 touchdowns to add to his impressive season so far. His deep threat WRs got open early and often as the Pats jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead.
East decided to run the ball more than they ever had, but the solid offense of the Falcons stopped most rushing attempts. By half time the score seemed lopsided on the scoreboard, but not as bad in person as VHS was able to score and make it 27-7 at the half.
The Falcons were mostly solid defensively, but had a hard time stopping this high powered passing offense of East which hasn’t been easy for any team they have played. Falcons definitely could’ve played complimentary football, but wasn’t able to with plenty of dropped interceptions by the defense and way too many turnovers.
Falcons definitely looked better offensively as they were able to string together more yards and 13 points in the loss. VHS QB Mowell continued to play decent football but was once again forced into long down plays causing him to throw interceptions. Keelin Releford and his fellow running backs ran the ball with grit and determination, racking up big yards, including a long run by Releford that set up his scoring run on the next play.
Grant Winegar alongside CJ Frayser and Owen Fleenor played fundamentally sound defense, but are needing some of the other players to step up and help this team win. The Falcons are getting better weekly and continue to fix issues. This team has had three straight tough games, but with seven weeks left, find themselves in a good position to win. This week they will play their first away game as they meet with another conference opponent in the Cougars of Northview Academy in Kodak.
