Week two article by VSN It only took two quarters of play to determine the winner of week two of the 2023 season. Lakeway came out of the gates running when number three Jace Ballard took the opening kickoff all the way down to the Falcons’ eleven-yard line. Lakeway did not hesitate from there. They immediately punched it in on an eleven-yard touchdown throw from quarterback Levi Martin to wide receiver Jesse Stump. Lakeway, with momentum on their side, attempted an onside kick and successfully recovered it. From this point on the Lions recorded twenty-seven unanswered points in the first quarter leaving the Falcons with questions on how to stop Lakeway’s offense, and how to produce some offense for themselves. The Falcons began to pick up momentum and move the ball efficiently and held the Lions scoreless in the second quarter. The lone touchdown came from a pass by freshman quarterback Jameson Mowell when he connected with senior Grant Winegar for a three-yard touchdown pass. The Falcons did seem to have a lot more momentum at the time and it was unfortunate the game had to be called due to the weather. The Falcons fell to the Lions 27-7. We will never know what that second half would have brought, but I do believe we would have seen a different Falcons team. Volunteer’s schedule gets no easier heading into week three as they host Sullivan East High School. The Falcons’ secondary will once again be challenged with defending a spread type of offense with multiple receivers left and right and an offensive line with wide splits. Sullivan East runs the spread offense 100 percent of the time and uses tunnel and bubble screens as an extension of the run game. Make sure to come out and support the Falcons and enjoy the homecoming festivities. If you are not able to make it, make sure to tune in to us on the mixlr app at Volunteer Sports Network. Pre-Game coverage will start at 7:00pm.
