Jonesborough- On a beautiful night in Tennessee's oldest city, the Pioneers of David Crockett High School were able to beat Volunteer High School 38-18 on their homecoming night. In a game full of ups and down the Falcons showed plenty of fight, but we’re unable to come up with their first win of the season, falling to 0-6 including already 0-3 in the conference.
In a game marred by questionable penalties, injuries and drama, it would be David Crockett that came out on top. A lot of scrappy plays and a bunch of rushes led to both teams having a couple players with superb rushing yards and multiple touchdowns. Keelin Releford for Volunteer had two touchdowns, while his partner in the backfield, Caden LaFollette, had over 100 yards rushing including a 62 yard touchdown run. That play is the longest play of the year for the Falcons.
As for the Pioneers, the one two punch of QB Jacob Whaley and RB Dylan Callahan resulted in an unstoppable presence out of the backfield. This combination was able to score multiple times as the Falcons defense struggled to stop their rushing prowess.
The possessions were back and forth for a while as both team had good drives twarted by penalties and good defense. The opening drive saw the Falcons march right down the field, aided by a great throw and catch by Mowell to Winegar, but the touchdown pass to score first was dropped. The attempted field goal was no good which gave the Pioneers the ball back on their own 6 yard line. Crockett was able to take it down the field and score and then later on scored a field goal making the score 10-0.
On the Falcons fourth drive of the game RB Caden LaFollette broke a huge run down the right side to score a 62 yard touchdown, followed by a failed extra point to make the score 10-6. The Falcons defense was able to get great pressure but could not stop the rushing attack which led to a halftime score of 31-6 in favor of David Crockett.
In the second half the Pioneers only scored one more touchdown to make the score 38-6, but the Falcons never gave up the fight as Keelin Releford ran in a 45 yard touchdown of his own. A few drives later he scored another making the score 38-18. Unfortunately it was too little, too late ultimately losing the game.
There is plenty to still be excited about with this team and they have another great test this Friday. They will travel to Unicoi County High School in a game where the Falcons will have to figure out how to find offensive production with the loss of RB Caden LaFollette due to injury.
