Week 4 article by VSN
After a 2 hour and 15 minute delay, kickoff finally happened at 9:45pm in Kodak as the Falcons went to battle the Cougars of Northview Academy. Northview planned on adding to their best start in school history as they came into this game at 3-0. They were able to do exactly that as they handled Volunteer with a 35-13 win to go to 4-0, while the Falcons fell to 0-4.
Even though the game started late, both teams came out with a lot of positive energy. Unfortunately, the curse of the first quarter hit again for Volunteer as they gave up 21 points in the first quarter alone. The scoring didn’t stop there as Northview added to their lead in the second quarter to make it 35-0 at the half.
Falcons once again struggled to stop the run on defense against the team that will run the ball very effectively while averaging 4.7 yards per rush coming into this game. The Cougars also had plenty of luck passing the ball, finding themselves with a few screens going deep and one deep pass connecting on 4th and long to set up a touchdown.
Volunteer finally got some things going in the second half as the defense was able to stop the bleeding. Made a few good stands and did not allow another point in the second half. Passing for the Falcons is still a large issue as they were not able to complete many passes at all, including one interception. The offense changed some things as they made improvements at the half with plans to run the ball on the shoulder of last weeks player of the game, Keelin Releford. Releford had multiple solid rushes while finding help from his fellow running backs to get good yardage and set up a rushing touchdown by Caden LaFollette to make it 35-6 in the 4th quarter.
Later on in the 4th quarter Volunteer scored their first defensive touchdown of the season as a host of Falcons swarmed Northviews QB to force a fumble that was fallen on in the end zone by Austin Glass.
Volunteer unfortunately found themselves in a game that could have been completely different had they not found themselves down so badly in the first quarter. Also if this team can fix some simple mistakes, they still find themselves in position to win ball games as this roster is full of wonderful potential in these young players.
The road does not get any easier for the Falcons as they have an off week this Friday, but will return to action against powerhouse Greeneville High School in Church Hill. One thing we do know is that this team does not give up. We have noticed a lot of determination in this team and coaches and are excited to start the second half of this season.
