Church Hill- Obviously not the start to the season that the Falcons had hoped for as VHS loses to West Ridge HS 40-0. As we said in the broadcast earlier, growing pains is the best way to describe it.

A lot of work needs to be done, but we see plenty of potential in this team as well! Sure, mistakes were made, but this squad has all the talent it needs. Turnovers were a problem, but everyone has them.

Offense looked fresh with plenty of good looking plays and great runs. Freshman QB Jameson Mowell showed a lot of grit, but struggled with interceptions. In my opinion only one was truly a bad throw as the others were deflections off WRs. The offensive line protected their QB well mostly but there is always room for improvement. He didn’t have a lot of time to really stay in the pocket and was forced to scramble a lot.

Defensively the Falcons lived up to the hype even though the score board didn’t reflect that, mostly because the QB for West Ridge had a crazy stat line with 4 rushing TDs. Grant Winegar and CJ Frasier met expectations with plenty of hard hits and good tackles in space.

But if this team wants to succeed they need to have a short term memory and focus on next week against Lakeway Christian Academy, a fairly new team from Morristown which can be a very winnable game. This years VHS team can be very good with the right mentality and we are excited to see it!

The game started out great with a lot of exciting moments. Opening drive found the Falcons on defense as they sacked the QB for West Ridge for a 8 yard loss! Immediately followed by a fumble recovery by the Falcons on the next play.

Offense couldn’t exactly get going in the first half with a few 3 and out drives with a couple first downs with good and bad plays sprinkled throughout. West Ridge was slow going early on too, but with the help of some short fields they were able to score. By halftime West Ridge was up 20-0.

In the second half QB Trey Frazier for West Ridge continued to dominate with two more rushing touchdowns followed by a touchdown by their RB. Not much passing in this game.

In summary, the offense definitely needs to continue to improve on their solid foundation, lean on their leaders to make plays, and we think the Falcons will be just fine.
